Abstract: The relevance of the study is due to the development of new technologies of rail transportation and the risks of the "human factor" associated with the reliability of the professional activities of persons in the operator professions. Thearticlepresentsthe results of a study on the method of cognitive evoked potentials which was held with the participation of 40 drivers of the passenger movement at the age from 24 to 46 years before and after a night trip, simulated on the simulator complex "Cab of the locomotive driver EP1M", The duration of the trips was 7 and 8 hours. The hypothesis was that with an increase in the duration of the shift for 1 hour, the risk of developing an imbalance in the processes of excitation and inhibition in the cortex of the brain of the machinists increases. At the end of the trips, respondents were identified who had significant parameters of the cognitive evoked potential of the P-300 beyond the limits of their age norm, and some of them were dominated by the processes of excitation of the cerebral cortex, and in the other part, the processes of inhibition. The obtained data were compared with the results of the psychophysiological examination before and after the trip. A "risk group" has been singled out – the machinists, who are not recommended to increase the duration of the shift for 1 hour.
