Abstract. This article presents a comprehensive historical-psychological study of the life and scholarly contributions of the Soviet psychotechnician Matilda Abramovna Yurovskaya (1896–1987), whose 130th birth anniversary is commemorated this year. The study addresses a significant gap in the historiography of Russian psychology concerning the role of women scholars who, during the 1920s and 1930s, became integrated into the country's research institutions and contributed alongside their male colleagues to the development of applied psychology. The article traces Yurovskaya's professional trajectory from her medical education and service as a physician in the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army to her contribution to the development of the Kazan Institute of Scientific Organization of Labor (KINOT), where she worked in collaboration with I.M. Burdyansky. Particular attention is devoted to the innovative work of KINOT's Psychotechnical Laboratory, headed by Yurovskaya. The article examines her collective approach to job analysis (professiography), which relied on large-scale surveys of practitioners to develop psychological profiles for professional occupations, including physicians and administrators. Special emphasis is placed on her studies of intellectual giftedness, in which she argued that assessment should focus on individuals' current intellectual functioning rather than on premature predictions of future achievement, while distinguishing verbal, mathematical, and technical abilities. Considerable attention is also given to the laboratory's experimental research on the physiology and psychology of fatigue. The article discusses the application of the Kraepelin test to the assessment of students' work capacity, as well as studies of occupational fatigue among telegraph operators adapting to new equipment, typists, and footwear factory workers. It also examines Yurovskaya's work at the V.A. Obukh Moscow Institute, where she investigated written workplace instruction in the context of occupational safety. Finally, the article analyzes her efforts to modernize personnel selection during the Second Five-Year Plan by advocating a shift from purely diagnostic assessment toward a developmental model of vocational guidance for young people. The study concludes by highlighting the continuing relevance of Yurovskaya's theoretical and empirical legacy for contemporary personnel selection psychology.
